What is Immersive Audio?

Immersive audio, surround sound, spatial audio, 3D audio…. These are all terms used to describe music that has more than the 2 channel stereo mix which has been standard for over 50 years. Surround sound has been the standard for film and movie theaters for several decades, however, music has never had a proper delivery format for immersive audio until recently. Advances in technology have made it practical and convenient for music lovers to experience their favorite records in surround sound. The most widely adapted format for immersive audio is Dolby Atmos.

What makes Dolby Atmos different than it’s predecessors is simple. Atmos stores information about where the sound objects should be located rather than the fixed channel systems of the past. This allows Atmos to scale on any playback system. From 128 speakers all the way down to a binaural rendering in headphones, Atmos still retains it’s spatial position for the listener. The benefit of this is, anyone can enjoy an immersive mix without the expense of a multi-speaker setup.

Currently, Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Unlimited are offering Dolby Atmos streaming. Most major label artists are now producing an Atmos mix in addition to the standard stereo mix. Apple music is now paying 10% more to artist who provide Atmos mixes. This is a huge indication of their commitment to the future of Spatial Audio.

Orchestrate Sound is one of the first music studios in Texas to offer full Atmos mixing and mastering services with a full 7.1.4 speaker system featuring Neumann KH series monitors.
